Don’t Say This to Your Kids

Talking to Kids Advice for Parents

Words matter. What a parent says to their child affects how that child acts, speaks, and believes. In Proverbs 22:6, parents are told to “Start children off on the way they should go,” and given the promise that if they do so, “even when they are old they will not turn from it.” How can parents start their children off right and train them in the way they should go? What sorts of words do build a child up and not tear them down?

Good Parenting Tips: What Not to Say to Your Child

• You are so… Parents who praise a child for being smart or athletic or for some other quality may feel they are supporting their children. However, research indicates that being praised for a character trait, rather than effort, caused kids to be discouraged when they failed. Saying, “Your hard work on practicing sure paid off,” or “I can tell you studied hard for that test,” encourages children to be confident that they can tackle even more difficult challenges.

The Mini Verse – Galatians 5:22-23

When a tree or a plant is healthy, it will bloom with nutritious fruits too. Likewise, as we depend on God’s power to change us. We live by the Spirit-working in our lives to produce Christ-like character in us. The fruit of the Spirit is evident when we allow God to mold us. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control will be all present in our lives.

Here are 3 steps that we need to take in order to bear this fruit in our lives:
1. Decide to live by the spirit. (Galatians 5:16)
2. Be dependent on God’s power to change you. (Zechariah 4:6)
3. Be directed by the Spirit in every situation. (Galatians 5:25)

Bible Cast: John the Baptist

John the Baptist is a very important Bible character in the New Testament. The Bible says that John the Baptist was a man who liked to be by himself. He often took time away to pray and seek God. He wore a garment made out of camel’s hair, and his diet consisted mostly of locusts and wild honey. John the Baptist’s main ministry was to baptize people in the water, which was a symbol of the new life they had in God. However, he told all of his followers that when the Messiah came, He would baptize them with the Holy Spirit.

John the Baptist was a humble man, who didn’t feel worthy to even untie the sandals that Jesus wore. He was honored when Jesus asked him to baptize Him in the Jordan River. The Bible says it was confirmed that Jesus was the Messiah when, “Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw the heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” (Mark 1:10-11).

The Importance of Teaching Humility to Children

Posted by admin

All Christian parents want to instill a sense of humility in their children. Although there are many great ways of teaching humility to children, it’s important to remember that God wants parents to rely on Him. As long as a parent has been a good example, and as long as the children are being taught to depend on God, God holds that child’s heart in the palm of His hand. Proverbs 22:6 says, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

Biblical Humility

In Romans 12:3, Paul writes, “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.” Humility is best described as appropriate thinking about oneself. Humility is the opposite of pride, which is inappropriate thinking about oneself. When a Christian demonstrates a prideful attitude, he is taking credit for his actions, leaving no credit for them whatsoever to the Lord. Humility does just the opposite. Humility acknowledges the fact that a person is willing and capable to achieve a goal, however, glory for that achievement is given to God. Humility is an important lesson for all children to learn, and it’s up to the parents to begin these lessons at an early age, right in the home.

The Mini Verse – Proverbs 11:2

Posted by admin

A heart full of pride has eyes set upon himself. With a forehead so high, he wouldn’t dare look low. Oh what a shame when his feet stumbled upon a rock. He would rather sink himself in the mud than to face up.

Proverbs 11:2

The only source of wisdom is God. The question might be is how do we listen to God so that we would be wise?

By allowing to deny ourselves from things that are hindering us from obeying God. This is tough but rest assured that when we obediently seek His will, we can be sure that He will direct us to make the right choices. And once we know His will, it could only be the right choice and we have the responsibility to embrace it and obey Him completely.

“The proud person always wants to do the right thing, the great thing. But because he wants to do it in his own strength, he is fighting not with man, but with God.”
- Kierkegaard
