In the beginning of the New Testament, Mary is a prominent Bible character. She is just a young Jewish girl, however she was chosen by God to have a very important job. She was chosen to carry and give birth to God’s Son, who would become the Savior of the world.
Mary was visited during the night by an angel named Gabriel. Gabriel told her of God’s plan, and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you!’” (Luke 1:28) (more…)
As time went on, Peter became a part of Jesus’ inner circle of friends. Jesus had Peter by his side when he raised Jairus’ daughter from the dead (as seen in Mark 5:35-43), and he was a part of the Transfiguration of Jesus (Matthew 17:1-9). Peter was also one of the disciples who stayed with Jesus on the night of his arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane.
John the Baptist is a very important Bible character in the New Testament. The Bible says that John the Baptist was a man who liked to be by himself. He often took time away to pray and seek God. He wore a garment made out of camel’s hair, and his diet consisted mostly of locusts and wild honey. John the Baptist’s main ministry was to baptize people in the water, which was a symbol of the new life they had in God. However, he told all of his followers that when the Messiah came, He would baptize them with the Holy Spirit.
John the Baptist was a humble man, who didn’t feel worthy to even untie the sandals that Jesus wore. He was honored when Jesus asked him to baptize Him in the Jordan River. The Bible says it was confirmed that Jesus was the Messiah when, “Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw the heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” (Mark 1:10-11).
