In the beginning of the New Testament, Mary is a prominent Bible character. She is just a young Jewish girl, however she was chosen by God to have a very important job. She was chosen to carry and give birth to God’s Son, who would become the Savior of the world.
Mary was visited during the night by an angel named Gabriel. Gabriel told her of God’s plan, and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you!’” (Luke 1:28) Although Mary was anxious when he appeared to her, his words put her fears to rest, and she responded with absolute obedience. She was pledged to be married to Joseph at the time, and she had no idea how he would react to news that she was pregnant before they got married.
Mary reacted in absolute obedience and trust, regardless of her circumstances. She knew God always had her best interests at heart, and that as His child, she would be protected.
